Let me know what the "surprise announcement" from MS is, I am dying to know ;)
The big news was Silverlight (http://silverlight.net/Default.aspx). Basically, a flash competitor, but with some pretty sweet windows media integration as well as (eventually) .NET integration. I'll probably write a followup article on this sometime in future...
